A message from deputy editor Emily Adams

How do you do that?! That was the question I wanted to ask Olympic figure skater Jason Brown when I interviewed him this month. The athleticism and artistry at Brown’s level of skating has always amazed me, but now that I’m in my early 30s, much like Brown (with new aches and pains that, I might add, appear out of nowhere on the regular), I am equally impressed by the dedication to the wellness routine needed to support such feats of strength on the ice. As Brown prepares for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships this winter, held at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, we chatted about his fitness regimen, his travel-friendly nutrition tips, and how he takes care of his mental health amid the chaos. If, like me, you’re inspired to hit the gym after reading the article, don’t miss the second story in this edition detailing restorative spa experiences that will help you recover from any workout.

As always, please don’t hesitate to email me if there are ways this newsletter can be more helpful to you. Stay well, St. Louis.

Inside Olympian Jason Brown’s routine as he prepares for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships

When St. Louis hosts the U.S. Figure Skating Championships this January, Olympian Jason Brown will take the ice in a city that helped shape his childhood—and now the next chapter in his career. With the 2026 Olympics ahead and his training evolving in his 30s, Brown is leaning on discipline, balance, and a deep love for the sport.

🥗 Nutrition is his foundation. Brown travels with half a suitcase full of food and meets monthly with a nutritionist to keep his diet consistent—helping him avoid jet lag, stay energized, and perform at elite levels wherever he’s training.

💪 Training smarter, not harder. About 70 percent of his preparation is off the ice—think Pilates, cardio, dance, dry needling, PT, stretching, and recovery work to keep his body strong without overuse.

🧠 Mind over medal. Weekly sports psychology sessions, breathing techniques, mental reset routines, and structured rest days help Brown stay sharp, avoid burnout, and reconnect with joy in the sport.

News You Can Use

AFTER THE STORM

Many St. Louisans are still reeling from the tornado disaster in May. While we know much of the physical recovery is ongoing, the mental health repercussions of this community trauma will last much longer. In response, a FEMA Show Me Hope Crisis Counseling Program grant will fund “psychological services to help build hope and resiliency in St. Louis and Sikeston area survivors.”

SPINAL SUCCESS STORY

A big moment for St. Louis’ startup scene: Allumin8 just earned FDA clearance for the first 3D-printed spinal screw. The porous design mimics real bone, which could cut down on the repeat surgeries that many spinal fusion patients face. The approval has already drawn interest from major medical companies, and CEO Alyssa Huffman says the focus now is simple—getting the technology to patients who need it.

BRIDGE BOOM

Great Rivers Greenway just hit a big milestone: eight greenway bridge projects are now in the works—either being planned, designed, or prepped for construction in 2026. It’s the biggest bridge-building push in the agency’s 25-year history; learn what it means for the greenways closest to you here.
