A message from Jen Roberts

In a recent interview with The New York Times, travel guru Rick Steves discussed how traveling expanded his worldview and how he hopes to instill that awareness in others. I enjoyed the entire interview, but the part that most resonated with me was when he made a distinction between being a tourist, a traveler, and a pilgrim. A tourist, he explained, collects monuments and attractions, normally with lots of selfies. The traveler interacts with locals and immerses themselves in the culture. And a pilgrim seeks opportunities for self-discovery. Depending on the trip, I feel that I have experienced all three, though I've never thought of myself as a pilgrim. I believe the distinction has more to do with the reason we are traveling than it does the destination. Sometimes, we travel to escape our busy lives, and other times, it's to learn more about a particular place. This week, we're exploring the Amana Colonies in Iowa, nearby places where you can watch eagles, and a historic hotel in Chicago. How you approach these destinations is up to you. As long as you're mindful of the communities and places where you visit, there is no wrong way to do it. Safe travels!
