It’s finally starting to feel like fall in the Midwest. Daylight Saving Time aside, the coming of colder weather and the holiday season certainly make the calendar feel as though it’s speeding toward the next year. Whatever your outdoor passion happens to be, now is the time to schedule some time outdoors. Visit the Gateway Outdoor Expo & Summit for ideas, from hiking and biking to paddling and birdwatching. (Here is a preview of what's new at the expo, including a run and rides). Or consider taking a scenic hike along a nearby trail. (See our lead story below.) Whatever your plans, grab an extra layer (or two), and enjoy your next outdoor adventure.

Explore the Gateway Outdoor Expo on November 15–16
Whether you’re a paddler, runner, camper, or simply outdoor-curious, the Expo has something for everyone. From hands-on demos to gear displays to expert talks, it’s a full weekend of fun.
As the colors change, visit one of these nearby trails to soak up the sights of the season.
Salt Lick Point Land and Water Reserve: Take the 1.8-mile Salt Lick Trail for some of the best views of foliage. The best views can be observed at Boy Scout Prairie on the trail’s west side. (Note: For a different, slightly easier experience, head to nearby White Rock Nature Preserve.)
Rockwoods Reservation: Thanks to the many sugar maple trees, the 3.2-mile Lime Kiln Trail offers sweeping views of vibrant autumn colors, such as burnt orange, yellow, and red. The trail itself features manageable hills, and there’s a small overlook where hikers can stop and take in the surrounding vista.
Don Robinson State Park: A trip along Sandstone Canyon Trail allows you to admire the views of all sorts of natural formations, including streams, waterfalls, and—as the name implies—sandstone canyons.
