Summer in the Midwest brings family vacations, barbecues, and the familiar refrain: “It’s not the heat. It’s the humidity.” These days, though, I’m just as likely to think about heat exhaustion, ticks, and skin cancer. As a parent, I pay far more attention to sunscreen labels, bug spray ingredients, and hydration than I ever did as a kid. That’s not because the outdoors are more dangerous—it’s because we know more about the risks and how to prevent them. The good news: The solution is simple. If we want to keep enjoying the outdoors, we need to remember the basics: sunscreen, water bottles, and bug spray. It’s not glamorous, but it works.
