You know what’s humbling? Paying $18 for a restaurant entrée only to inhale it in under four minutes while simultaneously opening ketchup packets, preventing crayon warfare, retrieving a fork from the floor, and negotiating with a tiny tyrant over why we cannot, in fact, live inside the restaurant booth forever.
You can understand why this week’s story about PopUp Kids’ Table spoke directly to my soul. A supervised craft table–inside restaurants–where kids can play without a tablet while parents maybe, possibly, take two consecutive bites of food while it’s still warm? Revolutionary. Nobel Prize-worthy.
At this point in parenting, I’m realizing that I’m willing to let a lot slide in exchange for a little peace. The toy explosion in my living room where none of the matching pieces in the set will ever be reunited? Fine. My son transforming every couch cushion into an escape from the lava floor? Sure. Finding Hot Wheels in my morning coffee? I’ve accepted my fate. Catch my son licking a Central West End storefront on our way to brunch? It’s good for his immune system.
Because what I really want this summer isn’t perfection. It’s more moments that feel fun and manageable. Which is exactly why I’m excited about a few things we’re building for this community this month:
