A message from dining editor George Mahe

The 23rd iteration of Taste of St. Louis, which takes place outdoors at Ballpark Village this weekend, has distinguished itself in several ways. It’s the first year that food trucks have been a part of the mix and the first year that the focus has been on lesser-known food vendors. The result: 40-plus players, roughly double the number of previous Taste events. If you think you’re up to speed on the local food scene, check out Cheryl Baehr’s article on the Taste, and take note of the participants, many of whom you might not recognize, with some not even having a social-media presence. The event is a prime example of the culinary variety our region has to offer. “We have everything from Caribbean to Mexican to Asian,” says Restaurant Row director Michele Coen. “There’s Thai, arepas, a St. Charles barbecue restaurant called Bruh Nem BBQ, Colombian, Jamaican. I think we have just about every region covered.”

Bite-Sized Bits

Hot Spot đŸŽ—ïž

World Without Cancer Day: Today, more than 130 St. Louis restaurants and retailers are taking part in A World Without Cancer Day by donating a portion of sales to Pedal the Cause, the nonprofit that helps fund cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Taste the Cause participants include Three Sixty, Balkan Treat Box, the Bartolino’s restaurants, Brasserie by Niche, the CafĂ© Napoli restaurants, Ivy CafĂ©, Ladue Taco, Madrina, Mai Lee, Pappy’s Smokehouse, Taco Buddha, and Wild Crush Wine Bar(n). The Pedal the Cause cycling event will take place September 22.

Insider Tip đŸŸ

Dog Days of Summer Bash: Tomorrow, beginning at 4 p.m., Black Sheep (3153 Morgan Ford) is hosting an outdoor party with live music, a magic show, a seafood boil, beer from 4 Hands Brewing, frozen margaritas, Tito's cocktails, and a dog-friendly area with a splash pad, ball pit, photo ops, and a dunk tank. Guests can also contribute to Stray Rescue of St. Louis by donating dog food, blankets, beds, and toys.

Poor Phone Skills: Service is typically synonymous with a customer’s experience at a restaurant, but it’s equally important when that customer is elsewhere. Dining establishments that specialize in carryout or delivery, in particular, must ensure that the staffer answering the phone communicates in a clear, polite manner. The person must also be able to convey essential information—such as hours, addresses, directions, specials, and wait times—over the phone. Otherwise, customers may simply hang up and call a different restaurant.

Openings, closings, and coming soons 🚹

Porano (13323 Manchester): After a six-year hiatus, the fast-casual Italian restaurant from Gerard Craft’s Niche Food Group reopened Monday in Des Peres. Customers can enjoy the brand’s signature pastas, grain bowls, salads, Detroit-style pizzas, gelato pops, and frozen Aperol spritzes.

El Burro Loco (1101 Lucas): The whimsically decorated, five-year-old downtown Mexican eatery, located a block north of Washington Avenue, closed 10 days ago. The Central West End flagship location remains open.

Tasty’s Street Eats (205 N. Truman, Crystal City): Slated to open next month, the brick-and-mortar restaurant will offer Southern-style barbecue, pork, chicken, and fish items, as well as signature sandwiches (Italian Beef and Philly cheesesteak) and “cake shakes.”
