Major League Soccer voted on some major changes at last week’s Board of Governors meeting. The big change—a shift to a fall-to-summer schedule—eclipsed some of the other interesting tweaks to the MLS schedule. That fall schedule will facilitate a change to a five-division, single-table playoff structure that will be uninterrupted by the fall international windows. These changes will, pending an agreement with the MLS Players’ Association, kick off in the fall of 2027. That leaves a short window for clubs to begin transitioning to a more winterized schedule. Read more about that challenge in today’s featured story.

What To Know

Further changes to the MLS schedule

MLS also voted on a five-division framework that centers around geographic travel and could unite St. Louis with Eastern Conference foes Chicago, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Each club will play at home and away against its five division foes, and play the rest of the league once in a 34-match season. The divisions still have to be drawn out, but the possibility of at least three more drivable away days should excite CITY SC supporters who have wanted more matchups across the Midwest.

Josh Yaro re-signs through 2026

St. Louis CITY SC continued marching through its offseason plans after re-signing 31-year-old CB Josh Yaro. Yaro originally signed with St. Louis CITY2 during its inaugural season, before transitioning to the first team in 2023. The Ghanian played 1,267 minutes for CITY SC last season and has now played more than 3,000 minutes for CITY SC across all competitions.

SLU claims Men’s Atlantic 10 double

The SLU men completed the A10 double in its 1-1(5-4) PK win over Dayton on Sunday. Brazilian freshman Theo Franca scored a late equalizer to force extra time, before St. Louis Scott Gallagher alum Tanner Anderson clinched the shootout victory. SLU’s tournament win was the program’s 40th major trophy, including this season’s regular season title. SLU now hosts Kentucky on Thursday at Hermann Stadium in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship.
